The new Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tom Price, has a frightening background on LGBT issues. As the Cabinet official responsible for Health Services, here are six reasons why LGBT people should be concerned about him.
1. He’s a Hetero Supremacist
Price called the Supreme Court’s 2015 marriage equality decision “a sad day for marriage,” supported a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, and even voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which allocates additional federal resources to investigate and prosecute crimes that are based on a victim's sexual orientation or gender identity. He also is against the right to choose and opposes federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
2. He Wants to Abolish the Affordable Care Act
Price wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act, privatize Medicare, and gut Medicaid — stripping healthcare from millions of Americans.
3. He Doesn’t Recognize Judicial Independence
When the Supreme Court ruled last year that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage, Price said it was “not only a sad day for marriage, but a further judicial destruction of our entire system of checks and balances.”
4. He Defends Hetero Supremacists
Price supported fired Atlanta Police Chief Kelvin Cochran after Cochran was suspended for remarks he made about gay people in a book in which he called homosexuality a “sexual perversion” and compared homosexuality to sex with animals and pederasty.
After Cochran was fired, Price signed on to a letter to Atlanta’s mayor, arguing that Cochran’s ‘religious freedom’ rights had been violated.
5. He Thinks LGBT Equality Causes Natural Disasters
According to a report from Right Wing Watch, Price hailed comments by a Rabbi who blamed Hurricane Sandy on New York’s marriage equality law and warned about the “tremendous medical health impact and economic impact” of the “homosexual agenda.”
In full agreement with the Rabbi, Price said “the consequences of activity that has been seen as outside the norm are real and must be explored completely, and in their entirety, prior to moving forward with any social legislation that would alter things.”
6. He Wants to Tell You Which Bathroom To Use
Price called the Obama administration’s guidelines to schools, which protects the rights of students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity, “absurd.”
In a Facebook post last May he said “We need a "federal restroom policy" for our nation’s schools. This is yet another abuse and overreach of power by the #Obama Administration, and a clear invasion of privacy. Schools should not have to fear retaliation for failure to comply.”
Please take the 100 Days and Me pledge to stay informed, be vigilant, and help fight federal policies and legislation that threaten the safety, health and well-being of LGBT people.
