Most LGBT and questioning students (8 of 10) have experienced harassment and discrimination at school, and a majority of them (56%) report hearing biased remarks from school staff, who often fail to intervene when they hear these remarks.

The president’s nominee for Secretary of Education has supported organizations that are openly hostile toward LGBT people and that promote conversion therapy. She also champions the use of tax dollars to fund private and religious schools where LGBT youth have no government protections.

Federal policies that protect LGBT and gender non-conforming youth from discrimination in schools, and their right to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity, may be at risk—as well as the Center’s national OUT for Safe Schools™ program that helps make campuses safer for LGBT students.
